SAT & ACT News

If your student will be in 11th or 12th grade this fall, and s/he has not yet taken the SAT or the ACT, then s/he should register on-line for one of the up-coming test sessions, at:

SAT and ACT test scores are used for college admissions, scholarships, and can be substituted for FCAT scores to meet graduation requirements. (I have not yet received the score equivilencies for 2011-2012)

Dual Enrollment Information – Effective Fall 2011

Admission Criteria:

  • Junior status
  • 3.0 unweighted CGPA
  • College placement test scores demonstrating college-readiness in Reading and Writing, per the College catalog (A student whose Math placement score is below college-level may be admitted but may not enroll in a math course, and will require overrides for all registration.)

Admission Process:

  • Admission will be limited access; only qualifying applicants will be admitted.
  • All applicants needing assessment will be given a Valencia ID at the point the application is received in the Dual Enrollment Office and referred to the Assessment Office for testing.
  • Only those applications for students who have passing test scores entered in the Valencia student records system will be submitted to Admissions for acceptance.
  • Accepted students will receive a dual enrollment acceptance letter from Admissions.
  • Students who do not provide test scores or have not met the cutoff requirements for Reading and Writing will receive a denial letter from the Dual Enrollment Office.
  • If ACT or SAT scores are to be used, the student should request that College Board send official scores to Valencia.
  • Applications received after the published deadline will be considered for the next available term.

Application Deadlines:

Deadlines will be as follows, regardless of whether classes are taken on a Valencia campus or a high school campus:

  • for Summer 2012, deadline is April 13, 2011

Currently enrolled students may continue in dual enrollment through spring term 2011-2012 or graduation, whichever comes first.

If you have never attended Dual-Enrollment classes at Valencia (and you are at least 16y.o. and have a 3.0GPA or higher), then you need to go to their website for complete information and to begin the registration process: http://valenciacollege.edu/dual/

Seniors and Juniors....
Senator Bill Nelson's office is now accepting applications for United States Service Academies (West Point, etc.) for students entering the college in 2012. If you are currently a Cornerstone Junior or Senior, you may apply now. Please go to: http://billnelson.senate.gov for an application and information. You may also contact the senator's Service Academy Coordinator at 407-872-7161.

High School Students need ACT, CPT, and/or SAT scores for almost all college admissions, many scholarships, for graduation (ACT & SAT can be use in lieu of FCAT scores). If you've already taken the ACT, you should know that 55% of students who retake the ACT inprove their scores.

Go to http://www.actstudent.org for complete info on the ACT.

As I'm sure you already know: your Honors classes are on a “weighted” 5pt GPA scale; and standard courses are on an “unweighted” 4pt. GPA scale.

Dual Enrollment courses at Valencia and AP courses taken at Florida Virtual School, count as college AND high school credits; and DE and AP courses are “weighted” on a 6pt GPA high school scale. There is no charge for FLVS or Dual Enrollment classes. All fees are waived. There may be some cost for books. For complete info, go to http://www.valenciacc.edu/dual

Please remember that Dual Enrollment is now accepting applications for summer and fall classes. I have applications in my office but REMEMBER that you must first:

  • Fill in the application (which I have in my office for you), return it to me to sign.
  • You must then take the signed application to Valencia's Dual Enrollment office.
  • Sign up for an Atlas Account online.
  • Get an appointment for an Orientation Class.
  • THEN you can actually register for classes...before registration closes.

Florida Virtual School (FLVS.net) offers the following AP courses:

AP Art History

AP Biology

AP Calculus AB

AP Calculus BC

AP Computer Science

AP English Lang. & Composition

AP English Lit. & Composition

AP Environmental Science

AP Macroeconomics

AP Microeconomics

AP Spanish Language

AP Statistics

AP U.S. Government & Politics

AP U.S. History

As with ALL courses at FLVS, you may sign-up for classes at anytime, BUT you may have to wait a day, a week, a month, or a couple of months before a new course section begins; so, it's important that you sign up as soon as you can, to be sure to get the courses you want (and so you can finish before graduation).

There's a lot to do, so get started NOW!
